Ljubljana feels less like a capital and more like a secret a few hundred thousand people have agreed to keep quietly among themselves.
The Ljubljanica curls through the centre under Plečnik's pale bridges, willow branches trailing into water the colour of weak tea while café chairs spill down both banks. A funicular hauls you up to the castle, and from the walls the red roofs give way to the white teeth of the Julian Alps.
This was Habsburg, then Yugoslav, and the green dragons on the bridge have watched all of it pass without comment.
Slovenes here are calm, outdoorsy and quietly proud. Sit long enough at the riverside market with a glass of orange wine and someone will tell you exactly which mountain to climb next.
Round trip from Prague, any dates in October 2026.
