About Tirana

Tirana is the most riotously colourful capital in the Balkans, its grey communist blocks splashed by a former-artist mayor in stripes, swirls and clashing paint.

At its heart the dictator's marble pyramid has been reborn as a climbable playground, and the once-forbidden Blloku quarter — reserved for the party elite — now hums with cafés, cocktail bars and scooters. Mount Dajti rises green behind the city, a short cable-car ride above the noise.

Albanians are exuberant and fiercely hospitable, genuinely curious about every visitor in a country still off the tourist map.

Eat grilled qofte and fresh-baked byrek, sip a tiny strong coffee, and toast the evening with a glass of fiery raki.
