About Sarajevo
Few cities pack as much history into so small a space as Sarajevo. Within a few hundred metres the Ottoman bazaar of Baščaršija, with its coppersmiths and domed mosques, gives way to grand Austro-Hungarian boulevards, and a plaque marks the corner where the shot that began the First World War was fired.
It is a city that has suffered — the hills that make it beautiful are the same ones from which it was besieged for nearly four years in the 1990s, and the scars and 'Sarajevo roses' are still there to read — yet it remains warm, funny and astonishingly alive.
Mosque, church and synagogue stand within sight of one another, and the call to prayer mixes with church bells over rooftops hemmed in by Olympic peaks.
Drink endless tiny cups of Bosnian coffee, devour cevapi and flaky burek in the old town, and let the city's bittersweet soul work on you.
