Santa Cruz is the working capital of Tenerife, a port city on the island's dry north-east coast, far from the resort strips of the south.
Behind it rise the Anaga hills, wrapped in ancient laurel forest, and an hour inland stands Teide, Spain's highest peak, a volcano in a vast lunar caldera. The city has its own golden beach at Las Teresitas, Calatrava's white Auditorio on the waterfront and one of the world's biggest carnivals.
It's mild in every season, unhurried and more Canarian than touristic, a base for an island whose climate changes every half hour of driving.
Eat papas arrugadas with red and green mojo, grilled fresh fish, and whatever the guachinche is cooking to go with its house wine.
Round trip from Prague, any dates in November 2026.

San Cristóbal de La Laguna, the island's first capital and a UNESCO site: a late-15th-century grid of streets built without walls, the model later copied across Spanish America. Colourful mansions with wooden balconies, a cathedral and the bars of a university town.

A jagged massif at the island's north-east tip, a UNESCO biosphere reserve wrapped in a laurel forest older than the ice ages. Ridge trails start at Cruz del Carmen; the road drops to the village of Taganana and the black-sand beaches below the Roques de Anaga.

Spain's highest peak, a 3,715 m volcano rising from a vast caldera of lava flows and pumice: Teide National Park, a UNESCO site. A cable car climbs to 3,555 m, the last stretch to the summit needs a free permit, and after dark the park is one of Europe's best places to watch the stars.

A hamlet of stone houses on a ridge of the Teno mountains, reached by a hairpin road that is a sight in itself. Below it a gorge drops to the sea between sheer walls; the trail down needs a booking.
to Los Cristianos, then ~50 min
The round, steep island next door, with the mist-soaked laurel forest of Garajonay, a UNESCO site, at its heart and silbo gomero, a whistled language, still taught in its schools. A ferry from Los Cristianos makes it a long day trip.
Old-town streets and late dinners
