The anti-Amsterdam

About Rotterdam

Rotterdam had its old heart bombed away and chose to build something defiantly modern in the crater.

Cube houses tilt at impossible angles, a market hall arcs over food stalls like a hangar, and Europe's largest port hums at the city's edge. There is nothing quaint here and the place is glad of it-a city of architects, dockworkers and a blunt, get-on-with-it pride.

The Maas runs wide and industrial, crossed by the elegant Erasmus bridge they nicknamed the Swan.

Graze your way through the Markthal, then drink with a crowd that has no interest in pretending to be Amsterdam.
