Rhodes Town grew around one of the largest and best-preserved medieval old towns in Europe, walled by the Knights of St John, who ruled the island for two centuries.
Inside the walls are the cobbled Street of the Knights, the Palace of the Grand Master, Ottoman mosques and fountains; outside them, the harbour where the Colossus is said to have stood and a town beach a few minutes' walk away. Around it, the island has long sandy bays, ancient Lindos on its acropolis and quiet hill villages.
It's busy and very much a holiday island in summer, at its best in late spring and in a still-warm October.
Eat pitaroudia, little chickpea fritters, try souma, the local spirit, and fresh fish by the harbour.
Round trip from Prague, any dates in November 2026.

A shaded ravine of streams and wooden bridges where, in high summer, thousands of tiger moths settle on the trees, the 'Valley of the Butterflies'.

The streets, houses and cisterns of an ancient Greek city laid out on a hillside above the island's quiet west coast.

A white village below a cliff-top acropolis, where the columns of the Temple of Athena stand inside the walls of a Knights' castle, with the round lagoon of St Paul's Bay beneath.

A small neighbouring island whose harbour is an amphitheatre of pastel neoclassical houses, with the monastery of Panormitis on its far side.

The island's southern tip, where a sand bar joins an islet and two seas meet on either side of it, calm on one and windy on the other: one of Europe's best kitesurfing spots.
Ruins, islands and long swims
Classical sites on the mainland, hundreds of islands offshore, and a sea that stays warm enough to swim in well into October.
