About Paris

Paris is so heavily mythologised that it's a shock to find it real-boulevards, zinc rooftops, the Tower actually there at the end of the street.

The Louvre alone could swallow a trip, but the city is just as much its cafés, its bridges and the booksellers along the Seine. It can be aloof, even brusque, sure of its own importance and in no hurry to flatter you.

Give it time and it softens into neighbourhoods-Montmartre's slopes, the Marais' lanes, a park bench in the late gold light.

Eat a flaky croissant, steak-frites and a glass of red at a corner bistro, elbow to elbow with Parisians.
