About Oslo

Oslo sits at the head of a long fjord, hemmed by forested hills, a small capital with outsized ambitions.

A white marble opera house slopes straight into the water, and you can walk up its roof; nearby, Viking ships and Munch's Scream wait in their museums. The Vigeland park fills with hundreds of writhing stone figures, and the whole waterfront has been remade in glass and steel.

Norwegians here are outdoorsy and unflashy, oil-rich but quietly so, happiest on skis or a boat.

Eat fresh shrimp peeled on the harbour and a waffle folded around brown cheese.
