Nice is the Riviera without the price tag of its glamorous neighbours-faded Italianate facades, a pebble beach and that impossible blue.
The Promenade des Anglais curves along the bay while the old town behind it stays stubbornly Niçois, narrow and ochre and full of market stalls. The light here drew the painters, and you understand why the instant the sun hits the Baie des Anges.
Monaco, Antibes and the perched hill villages are all a short train ride along the coast.
Eat chickpea socca hot off the griddle, a proper salade niçoise, and a stuffed pan bagnat on the sand.
