Europe's anchor city

About London

London is less a city than a collection of villages that swallowed an empire and never stopped expanding.

The Tower and the Abbey hold a thousand years of crowns and beheadings while glass towers crowd the old financial square mile. Every neighbourhood is a different country-curry houses, Caribbean carnivals, Polish delis-stitched together by a red-bus, black-cab grid.

It's expensive, vast and weather-beaten, but its great museums are free and its energy is endless.

Eat a curry on Brick Lane, a Sunday roast in a pub, and submit to the ritual of afternoon tea.
