About Helsinki
Helsinki faces the Baltic at the end of Europe, a low granite city of the sea where the streets simply run out at the water's edge.
Neoclassical Senate Square and its white cathedral were built to stand in for St Petersburg, but the real character is quieter — Alvar Aalto's clean lines, the island fortress of Suomenlinna a short ferry out, and design shops folded into every block. Saturday means the old market hall, the sauna and a cold dip, whatever the season.
Finns are famously reserved and easy with silence, and a good deal warmer than they first seem once the coffee is poured.
Eat a bowl of creamy salmon soup at the harbour market and a cinnamon korvapuusti bun still warm from the oven.
