Hallstatt

Salzkammergut · Village

A salt village on the water

About Hallstatt

Hallstatt is a few hundred people on a ledge between a sheer mountainside and a deep, cold lake, photographed so often that arriving feels like stepping into the picture.

The salt mine above the village has been worked for some seven thousand years and lent its name to a whole Iron Age culture. Beside the church, the bone house keeps rows of painted skulls, moved there because the steep churchyard had no room to spare.

Day-trippers fill the one lane by late morning and leave by dusk; stay the night and the village falls quiet. From here a cable car climbs the Dachstein, and the road runs on to Gosau and the other lakes of the Salzkammergut.

Eat Reinanke, the lake's whitefish, smoked or straight off the grill, then walk it off along the Soleleitung, the brine pipeline that has run along the hillside since 1607.

Day trips from Hallstatt

  • Half day

    Dachstein Krippenstein

~15 min carbus, then cable car

A cable car from Obertraun climbs to the Krippenstein plateau at 2,100 m, where the 5fingers platform hangs over a 400-metre drop above the lake. On the way up, the Dachstein's ice and mammoth caves open into the mountain.

  • Half day

    Gosausee

~25 min car, ~45 min bus

A still mountain lake mirroring the glaciated peaks of the Dachstein. The classic view opens right from the shore at the trailhead, and a flat path circles the lake for quieter angles.

  • Half day

    Bad Ischl

~30 min car, ~45 min bus

The Habsburgs' summer town: Franz Joseph's Kaiservilla in its park, the Zauner pastry shop and the brine baths that made it a spa. It led the Salzkammergut's year as European Capital of Culture in 2024.

  • Half day

    Wolfgangsee & St. Wolfgang

    ~45 min car, ~1 h 30 min bus

A long turquoise lake under the Schafberg, whose rack railway climbs to a summit view over a dozen lakes. In St. Wolfgang the pilgrimage church keeps Michael Pacher's late-Gothic winged altar.
