Grindelwald is a mountain village of wooden chalets in a green valley, with the black north face of the Eiger rising almost straight above its main street.
A gondola from the village climbs towards the glaciers and the railway to Jungfraujoch, the highest station in Europe; another lifts to First for the cliff walk and the trail to the Bachalpsee. In winter the same slopes become one of the big ski areas of the Alps.
It's busy and expensive, and it is all about the mountains: come for the trails and the views, not for the village.
Eat rösti with an egg and mountain cheese, a fondue in a hut, and meringues with double cream, said to have been invented in nearby Meiringen.
Round trip from Prague, any dates in November 2026.
Grindelwald has no airport. Flights land in Zurich (then 2 h 50 by train ≈ €60) or Bern (then 1 h 50 by train ≈ €45).
A gondola above the village to a cliff walk bolted to the rock face, and an easy trail to the Bachalpsee, a mountain lake that mirrors the Schreckhorn and Wetterhorn.
The highest railway station in Europe, at 3,454 m, reached by a railway tunnelled through the Eiger: the Aletsch, the longest glacier in the Alps, an ice palace and the Sphinx observatory above it.

A glacial valley of sheer rock walls and seventy-two waterfalls, with the Trümmelbach falls thundering inside the mountain and car-free Mürren and Wengen perched above.
Peaks, trains and quiet
The Alps at their most vertical, reached by trains that leave on the minute. Spotless, endlessly walkable and priced accordingly.
