Funchal

Madeira, Portugal

An island for hikers

About Funchal

Funchal clings to the green slopes of Madeira, a subtropical island stranded far out in the Atlantic.

The whole place tilts toward the sea-terraced gardens above, dramatic cliffs and black-pebble coves below. The real draw is the levadas, irrigation channels turned hiking trails that thread along ridges and through dripping laurel forest.

It's mild all year, lush and faintly old-fashioned, the kind of island that rewards walking over lying still.

Eat espetada, beef grilled on a bay-laurel skewer, and sip the island's fortified Madeira wine.
