Dubrovnik is almost too perfect-a complete walled city of pale stone and orange roofs jutting straight into a sapphire sea.
Walk the ramparts for the full effect, the whole town laid out below between the walls and the water. It was an independent merchant republic that out-negotiated bigger powers for centuries, and that proud, polished self-possession still lingers.
The summer crowds and cruise ships are real, so come early or late and let the marble streets shine empty.
