About Budapest
Budapest is two temperaments stitched together by bridges: hilly, aristocratic Buda brooding above the water, and flat, restless Pest sprawled out below.
Grand boulevards lead to a parliament built to intimidate, while down the side streets ruin bars flicker inside bombed-out courtyards. The Danube has frozen, flooded and carried off empires, and the city wears that history like a heavy coat it refuses to take off.
Underneath everything the thermal water keeps rising, so the day ends where it should-neck-deep in a steaming bath while old men play chess on floating boards.
Order goulash, a lángos drowned in sour cream and a shot of pálinka, and don't expect anyone to hurry you.
