Beer, comics and the Grand Place

About Brussels

Brussels hides one of Europe's most spectacular squares behind a tangle of bureaucratic boulevards and steep, baffling streets.

Step into the Grand Place after dark and the gilded guildhalls glow like something staged; step back out and you're among comic-strip murals and Art Nouveau curves. It's the capital of the EU and faintly embarrassed about it, far more interested in chocolate, mussels and a good argument over fries.

Flemish and French rub along uneasily, and the result is a city that refuses to take itself too seriously.

Drink a Trappist beer brewed by monks, eat moules-frites, and let a waffle ruin your shirt.
