Bratislava puts on no show and needs none — a compact capital folded against the Danube, easy to overlook between flashier Vienna and Budapest just upriver.
In the centre, Habsburg palaces and a blocky hilltop castle rub up against grey communist housing and oddities like the UFO-topped SNP Bridge. Coffee-house warmth leaks from doorways, an old tram rattles past, and the place feels lived-in rather than staged for visitors.
Hungarian kings were once crowned here; today it is a modest, workaday capital that only really found its feet after the bleak 20th century loosened its grip.
Slovaks here are direct and unsentimental — no small talk, just an honest answer and a shot of slivovica. Their respect takes a while to earn, and it is worth the wait.
Round trip from Prague, any dates in October 2026.
